AJ Styles will challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Title at Backlash: France

Former Intercontinental Champion Ryback believes Dustin Rhodes could return to WWE to play a part in Cody Rhodes’ feud with AJ Styles.

After capturing the Undisputed WWE Championship from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL, The American Nightmare is set to defend it for the first time against AJ Styles at Backlash: France next month. The Phenomenal One earned his shot at the title after beating LA Knight last Friday on WWE SmackDown.

On his Ryback TV podcast, the former superstar addressed Cody’s upcoming clash with Styles, pointing out that the two have no story yet. Meanwhile, he suggested that Rhodes’ brother, Dustin, return to WWE after five years to spice up the storyline.

“Now, all of a sudden we have a cold matchup with AJ Styles is now gonna be the number-one contender and there’s no story at all, yet. And they have a quick turn around time to this pay-per-view. So, it’s gonna be, now we’re gonna rely on them going out and having a good match. You know, that’s unless you need these stories of AJ Styles attacking and Dustin Rhodes is brought in. I think that might be something down the line if Dustin/Goldust’s contract [expires]. But you need spice on the story, right? That’s where Cody’s gonna need in WWE,” he said. [1:10:55 – 1:11:28]

Will Dustin Rhodes return to WWE?

Before joining AEW in 2019, Dustin Rhodes had multiple runs in the Stamford-based company. The 55-year-old has held several championships, including the Intercontinental Title and the tag team titles in the WWE.

During a promo on SmackDown ahead of WrestleMania XL, The Rock referred to Cody Rhodes’ brother as a future Hall of Famer. Meanwhile, The Undertaker also expressed his desire to see the AEW star return to enter the Hall of Fame.

“Absolutely. Oh yeah, 100 percent. This is a semantics thing at this point. I would imagine at some point down the road (…) I think his resume is Hall of Fame worthy. Obviously we know the one stickler [AEW] right now. I think at some point that goes away, and then I couldn’t see too much time probably going by that he wouldn’t be inducted,” The Deadman said.

While Dustin is still under contract with AEW, it would interesting to see if he will return to the Stamford-based company when his current deal with Tony Khan’s promotion expires.
