kf – MICHAEL JORDAN MUSEUM ‘WILL NOT CONTINUE’ IN HOMETOWN OF WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, WHY?

Plans for a Michael Jordan museum in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina have reportedly fallen through.

Jordan, widely considered the greatest player in NBA history, starred at the city’s Laney High School before playing at the University of North Carolina and going on to win six championships and six MVP trophies with the Bulls.

But according to the Wilmington StarNews, previous plans for Jordan to be honored with a museum – as part of a broader investment into the downtown area called ‘Project Grace’ – will not move forward.

The publication cited a press release from the New Hanover County government, which said the ‘Jordan family’ had decided against the idea.

‘The conversations during this due diligence and discovery phase have been collaborative and productive, but the family has decided not to pursue a Michael Jordan Family Museum at this time,’ the release said.

Jordan won six championships with the Bulls and is widely considered to be the ‘GOAT’

According to the StarNews, New Hanover county manager Chris Coudriet announced in December that Wilmington could be getting a Jordan museum.

The same month, a memorandum of understanding dated December 4 was reportedly signed by Coudriet and Jordan’s mother, Deloris P. Jordan.

The new museum would have included ‘important artifacts and objects to tell the family’s story,’ and would have been part of a project bringing a new library to downtown Wilmington as well.

‘While this museum is not moving forward, the county looks forward to its continued partnership with the Jordan family to display memorabilia from Michael Jordan’s life and career in the Cape Fear Museum and appreciates their continued support of our community,’ the release read.

Laney High School’s sports complex is named after Jordan.

The ex-Bulls star owned the Charlotte Hornets for 13 years before selling his majority shares last year.
