Jennifer Lawrence opens up about barely understanding her 2017 movie ‘Mother!’
No Hard Feelings actress Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about her 2017 film Mother!, which was directed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, whom she was dating during the production of its movie.
Speaking on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, host Cohen asked Lawrence, “On a scale of 1 to totally confused, how much did you understand your film Mother!?”
“I’m going to be honest,” she replied. “Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had CliffsNotes. So … 5? Or a 4. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!”
Mother! is a psychological horror written and directed by Darren Aronofsky. The movie revolves around a young woman, referred to simply as Mother, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who lives with her older husband, Him, portrayed by Javier Bardem.
The story unfolds in a surreal and increasingly disturbing manner as a series of uninvited guests disrupt the couple’s tranquil existence.
Although the movie may look like an Oscar contender at first glace, critics were harsh on the movie and it received an ‘F’ CinemaScore.
“F— the director?” Cohen joked. The Dark Phoenix actress responded, “Yeah!”
Speaking with Adam Sandler for Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series, Lawrence explained what it was like to date her director.
“Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to go see it, and then it’s just out of your hands,” she said.
“I normally just kind of let it go. Dating the director was different. We’d be on the tour together, I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.
“He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about and I get it, it’s his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it. I was doing double duty trying to be a supportive partner, while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about mother! for one second?”
“I finally was just like, ‘It’s not healthy, neither of us are doing it’ because if I read it, I start getting defensive. Especially because it’s my man.”
