Roger Goodell was all smiles last night during the first round of the highly anticipated 2024 NFL Draft, which saw Caleb William go first overall to the Chicago Bears after a long and strenuous off-season.

Goodell may not have had a say in who the Bears took with their first overall pick, but he does have a say in many other things, including how the NFL’s games are played and how each team’s schedule is set up.

Fans have been theorizing ever since the NFL moved to a 17-game schedule back in 2021 that the move was just a front to test a longer season format so the league could create an 18-game schedule to help increase profits.

It turns out that these fans were correct, as Goodell essentially confirmed the rumor with an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, where he floated the idea of an 18-game schedule. It would be done by removing one pre-season game and adding a week to the season calendar.

Roger Goodell To Change NFL To An 18 Game Season

Warren Sharp wrote the rules as they would be during an 18-game schedule, stating that it would include an “extra bye week,” there would be “18 games spread over 20 weeks,” and more primetime games would be on the schedule.

NFL fans have been asking for the day after Super Bowl Sunday to be a day off work to recover from all the celebrating and parties usually held during the big game at the beginning of February.

This may be a change that would unite NFL fans alike as the Super Bowl would fall on the day before President’s Day, giving everyone an extra day off, and more meaningful football would be played during the season.

For the sake of all of us football fans, let’s hope that the NFL Goodell follows through on this great idea, and then, just maybe, he may earn some fan respect and get booed less when he calls the selections at the draft.
