“He asked me not to pitch too many ideas”: One Piece Editor Revealed Eiichiro Oda’s 1 Rule While Writing the Series After Trusting Him With the Series Conclusion

One Piece editor reveals Eiichiro Oda’s most important rule.

SUMMARY

Only Eiichiro Oda, the series creator, and the editors are aware of the One Piece treasure and the other secrets hidden inside the narrative.
This was confirmed by Suguru Sugita, who worked on One Piece from 2014 and 2017.
Sugita also discussed the rules that the editors of One Piece have to follow when working on the series.

The One Piece treasure and other mysteries that have been kept secret in the story are only known to Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the series, and its editors. Over the course of almost 30 years, One Piece has had twelve editors, and all of them probably know what the treasure is.

This was confirmed by Suguru Sugita, who worked on One Piece from 2014 to 2017. He was once interviewed by a Japanese radio show called Gold Rush, where he admitted to the fact that, besides Oda, the people who know about the secrets of One Piece are the editors of the series. Besides them, Oda has not trusted anyone else with this secret.

When Sugita was the editor of One Piece, the series was going through one of the most important parts of the narrative, featuring the Dressrosa arc, the Zou arc, and the Whole Cake Island arc. Sugita also talked about the rules that the editors of One Piece have to follow while working on the series.

Eiichiro Oda Told The One Piece Secret To Sugita-san Just After Seven Hours

Sugita’s 2015 interview with Gold Rush was translated by Okami-fr and shared on Tumblr, where the editor confessed to the fact that the rumor about Oda revealing the ending of One Piece to his editors is true. He went on to say that Oda informed him about the One Piece ending just seven hours after he became the editor of One Piece.

Sugita stated:

“Yes, it’s true. [He told me] about seven hours after I became his editor on the phone. He asked me whether there was anyone around. I told him no, and he said, “alright, I don’t have anyone around me either, so let’s talk,” and then he told me.”

The One Piece conclusion is one of the most important mysteries in the anime and manga worlds since it not only reveals how the series ends but also answers the most anticipated question of the series: “What is the One Piece treasure?” for which fans have been waiting for so long.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Rule That Every One Piece Editor Has to Follow

During the interview, Sugita was asked about the most important rule that the editors of One Piece have to abide by. Sugita explained that Eiichiro Oda does not like to work on the ideas of others. He feels that if the idea for the narrative comes from others, he won’t be able to draw it to his full potential.

Sugita stated:

“He asked me not to pitch him too many ideas. The reason behind that is that if it’s another person’s idea, then he won’t be as inclined to draw it. Because it’s his own story, he wants to draw his own ideas. Also, he wants to work on the manga on the same playing field as his editor, so he asked me not to call him Oda-sensei but instead Oda-san. And Oda-san also calls me, a 26-year-old newbie editor, “Sugita-san”. [He] also asks me to honestly tell him what I think.”

Sugita also revealed that despite that, Oda respects the opinions of his editors and always asks them what they think about the aspects that he drew. He treats everyone with respect, no matter who he is working with, and likes to work on the same level as the editors of One Piece.
