NBA Insider and analyst for ‘The Athletic,’ Shams Charania, has reported mutual interest between Klay Thompson and the Orlando Magic entering NBA free agency. During the latest episode of FanDuel’s Run it Back show, Charania revealed that the Magic will likely pursue Klay Thompson in free agency this summer and have mentioned it as a possible option.
“The Magic can open up an excess of sixty million dollars in cap space this off-season. One name to keep an eye on is Klay Thompson; I’m told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Klay Thompson. Thompson, along with several other vets around the league, is looking at the Magic as a situation where if you plug in a guy like Thompson, you plug in another veteran player – whether it be at the point guard position or the shooting guard position – this team can make a real jump around Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.” Charania said on the podcast.
Acquiring Thompson would be a significant move for the Orlando Magic
According to Charania, it’s possible that Thompson may leave the Golden State Warriors to join the Orlando Magic. While he has publicly stated his desire to stay with Golden State, the 34-year-old forward might use Orlando and other teams as leverage.
The Magic are in an excellent position to make a strong argument, but Thompson’s position and pay will be essential factors. Acquiring Thompson would be a significant move, as he had a good season, averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 77 games this season, despite a slight dip in performance this year.
Despite the speculations of a potential trade, it will be interesting to see where Klay Thompson is taken in the next trade. Because of his synergy with Draymond Green and Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors might also be tempted to keep him.
