John Legend’s single “Never Break” has taken on new meaning in his personal life.

Just two weeks after suffering a pregnancy loss with his wife, Chrissy Teigen, Legend returned to the stage during the Billboard Music Awards Wednesday for an emotional performance of the ballad from his “Bigger Love” album.

On Thursday, Legend reached out to Teigen again, tweeting a YouTube version of the “Never Break” performance to his wife.

“This is for Chrissy,” Legend wrote in the tweet. “I love and cherish you and our family so much. We’ve experienced the highest highs and lowest lows together. Watching you carry our children has been so moving and humbling.”

“I’m in awe of the strength you’ve shown through the most challenging moments. What an awesome gift it is to be able to bring life into the world. We’ve experienced the miracle, the power and joy of this gift, and now we’ve deeply felt its inherent fragility,” Legend wrote. “We promised each other this on our wedding day seven years ago, and every challenge we’ve faced has made that promise more powerful, more resilient. Our love will remain. We will never break.”

Seated behind a black piano in an all-white tuxedo at the Billboard Awards, Legend dedicated “Never Break” to Teigen.

“This is for Chrissy,” he whispered before belting out the powerful lyrics as his voice appeared to ache: “We got a good thing, babe. Whenever life is hard. We’ll never lose our way. ‘Cause we both know who we are.”

Kelly Clarkson, the host of the Billboard Music Awards and fellow “Voice” judge, said her colleague’s “very special performance” was “possibly my favorite of the night.”

“He and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world, the highs and the lows,” Clarkson said while introducing Legend. “Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time and I’m thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us.”

Following his pre-taped performance, Clarkson added, “John, that was so beautiful… All my love to you and Chrissy.”

John Legend performs onstage at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, broadcast on October 14, 2020 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.

This marked Legend’s first performance since he and Teigen lost their third child, a son they named Jack, in late September. Teigen announced the news on Instagram.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” Teigen wrote. “Everyday can’t be full of sunshine.  On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”

In Thursday’s tweets, Legend thanks fans for the outpouring of support in the traumatic time in the family.

“More than anything, we’ve heard so many stories about how so many other families have experienced this pain, often suffering in silence. It’s a club no one wants to be a part of, but it’s comforting to know we’re not alone,” Legend wrote.

Teigen will have “much more to say about this when she’s ready,” Legend added. “But just know we’re grateful and we’re sending love.”
