‘Madame Web’ proves that Sony doesn’t know what to do with their Spider-Man license… 1 out of 10 webs from us..k

The live-action adaptation of Marvel’s Madame Web has faced criticism for its departure from the source material and lackluster execution. The film, which follows Cassandra Web, a paramedic in New York City with clairvoyant abilities, fails to capture the essence of the original character.

One of the most significant departures from the comics is the erasure of Cassandra’s disability. In the source material, Cassandra Web is blind and paralyzed, conditions caused by Myasthenia gravis. However, in the film, she is portrayed as healthy, with the explanation for her well-being provided in the second act. This decision not only undermines the authenticity of the character but also disregards representation for individuals with disabilities.

Despite an intriguing concept, the film falls short in its execution. While attempting to explore themes of destiny and drawing inspiration from the comics’ spider mythos, Madame Web fails to reach a satisfying conclusion. The plot is mired in unnecessary exposition, and the development of the characters feels lacking.

Moreover, the decision to detach Madame Web from Sony’s Spider-Man Cinematic Universe (SSCU) is perplexing. While intended to focus on the character’s journey, the film misses the mark by failing to deliver a compelling narrative. The performances, particularly by Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, feel uninspired, and the villain, Ezekiel Sims, is forgettable.

Despite its shortcomings, Madame Web does have a brief moment of promise during a set piece featuring Brittany Spears’ “Toxic.” However, this scene is overshadowed by the film’s overall lack of cohesion and creativity.

In conclusion, Madame Web is a disappointment, marred by poor scriptwriting and performances. Sony’s mishandling of the Spider-Man license further compounds the film’s issues, contributing to its overall failure.
