One Piece is a series that is no stranger to incredibly powerful characters. From Luffy to Kaido, many villains and heroes throughout the story have shown amazing feats that have cemented their place among the strongest characters in the entire franchise. One such name is Edward Newgate, who is more commonly known to the rest of the world as the legendary Whitebeard; the strongest man in the world.
Whitebeard is a titanic man, easily eclipsing many of the characters who have been shown throughout the series. However, his monstrous size is only just a small part of his overall power, as his Gura Gura no Mi Devil Fruit gives him the strength to topple mountains, making him arguably the most physically dominant and strong character that One Piece has ever introduced, so let’s see what makes this fruit so incredible.
Who Is Whitebeard?
First Appearance
One Piece, Episode 151, “The 100,000,000 Man! The World’s Highest Authority and the Pirate Blackbeard!”
Debut Date
April 20, 2003
Edward Newgate was the renowned captain of the equally fabled Whitebeard Pirates, who were named after his famous moniker. Before he became the world’s most legendary living figure, he was an orphan boy born on the island of Sphinx who was eventually drafted into the ranks of the renowned Rocks Pirates, where he would meet many others who themselves went on to become some of the world’s most notorious pirates, such as his friend Kaido.
If I can save this one young man’s life, I will earn my right to retire from the world!
He would eventually leave to form his own crew called the Whitebeard Pirates, who were known around the world as being the closest to the mythical One Piece. He was also a great friend and rival to Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, himself, and held the second-largest bounty in the history of piracy, only after the latter. He was so formidable that he eventually became one of the 4 Emperors of the Sea who ruled over the New World.
The Gura Gura no Mi Is The Most Destructive Devil Fruit
First Appearance
One Piece, Episode 461, “The Beginning of the War! Ace and Whitebeard’s Past!”
Powers
The ability to create incredibly powerful earthquakes and tremors off of any surface
The Gura Gura no Mi is a Paramecia Type Devil Fruit and not only is it the most powerful of this class, it is widely regarded as one of the most powerful Devil Fruits of them all due to its unmatched destructive potential. Its strength was stated by Fleet Admiral Sengoku, who noted that because of it, Whitebeard had the power to destroy the entire world if he wanted.
It may very well be us that meet our end here today… Because that man… Holds the power to destroy the very world!
The Gura Gura no Mi is easily the most powerful of all Paramecia Types, and its ability operates more like a Logia Devil Fruit by giving Whitebeard the ability to form and control all kinds of tremors. While it isn’t categorized as such, it is far more destructive than even the strongest Logia Type. This, paired with Whiteboard’s mastery over the different kinds of Haki and his Supreme Grade Weapon, the Murakumogiri, makes him one of the most dangerous adversaries that any character can go up against in the entirety of One Piece.
Strengths of the Gura Gura no Mi
The essence of this fruit’s abilities is letting Whitebeard create and control vibrations that can travel effortlessly through any medium. These vibrations can be something as weak as a gentle nudge to earthquakes powerful enough to destroy entire islands, which Whitebeard can emit through any surface, whether it’s the ground, water, or even the air.
During the Marineford arc, it was shown that aside from the devastating immediate effects of the Devil Fruit’s might, aftershocks created from the tremors can continue to cause harm far away. The Gura Gura no Mi also seems to give Whitebeard the ability to use his control over vibrations to grab hold of any medium, including normally intangible things, which he was seen to do when he cracked and pulled the air itself.
Weaknesses of the Gura Gura no Mi
This Devil Fruit does not have many weaknesses, which goes on to cement it as one of the strongest objects in the entire series. However, it is susceptible to the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses such as Haki, water, and Seastones. The biggest downside to the Gura Gura no Mi is that any level of tremors that Whitebeard creates are not indiscriminate. Everyone, even Whitebeard’s friends and crew, can be damaged by the quakes that he creates, so he needs to be very careful about how he uses his powers.
This meant that he typically had to fight alone to use his true strength, as his comrades could have been caught in the crossfire. Also, no matter how strong the quakes he makes are and how much he can control them, there still are a couple of things here and there that the quakes cannot destroy, such as the walls at Marineford. These quakes were also held back by the combined Busoshoku Haki of the 3 Admirals.
