Tyler Guyton is no longer a Sooner. The Austin, Texas, local became the Dallas Cowboys’ first pick and the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

It was a struggle. The Cowboys had to trade down in order to select the Oklahoma graduate and fill the gaping holes left by the departure of All-Pro tackle Tyron Smith in free agency.

Before the official announcement, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called Guyton, who was surrounded by his family members at home watching the draft unfold.

Hey Tyler. Tyler, this is Jerry Jones. Hey man, listen, I wanted to be the first to tell you that you are no longer a Sooner. You are a Dallas Cowboy. We are glad to have you.

Jerry Jones said

Meanwhile, Guyton, who grew up dreaming of wearing the famous white and blue, was going through a myriad of emotions. He can be heard saying, “Oh my God,” when Jones revealed they were selecting him.

Dallas Cowboys offensive line coach Mike Solari then took over the phone.

Tyler? Mike Solari. Hey, congratulations, man. [I am] excited to work with you.

Tyler Guyton is relishing the opportunity to play for the Dallas Cowboys

The 22-year-old was a true freshman at TCU before transferring to Oklahoma. He played two seasons for the Sooners, accumulating more than 1,000 career offensive snaps, which is equivalent to one NFL season.

When Guyton saw that the Cowboys had agreed to a trade with Detroit and went down, he had his heart in his mouth.

My heart dropped because I really love the Cowboys and I really love football. But we got the job done.

Tyler Guyton told CBS Sports on a conference call

However, he doesn’t want to dwell in the past and is ready to step up for whichever position the O-line Solari would instruct him to play. He has played both right and left tackle. After Smith, who was part of the All-Decade team, left, the Cowboys needed someone big and muscular yet nimble to fill that spot.

I've done both. I feel like either one I'm good at, and I'll jump right into left tackle and do whatever I can.

Guyton said

Jones and the Cowboys front office had to pass up players like OT Jordan Morgan, who went to the Green Bay Packers, and center Graham Barton, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Whether Guyton likes it or not, his performances will be compared to theirs from the get-go.
